Instead of heading home after work last Wednesday, a few Godfreys team members headed down Hagley Park to Ronald McDonald House with groceries and spatulas, ready to cook up a two course dinner Gordon Ramsey couldn’t even yell at.
What is Ronald McDonald House?
Ronald McDonald House (the House) is something most of us have heard of, but how many of us really know what it is, or what they do there?
Based a few minutes’ walk from Christchurch Hospital, the House is a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families to retreat to after a long day in the wards. They have created an environment that is truly welcoming and provides respite from the hospital. Warm rooms, fully stocked kitchens, and areas to be a family make their guests comfortable and their facilities feel just like home, in a way a hotel room with takeaways for dinner yet again never could.
Volunteering for the Family Dinner Programme and cooking for the families at the House is one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences, and Godfreys Law is proud to be one of many groups paying the House regular visits. The work the House does provides a sense of stability to Kiwi families doing it tough, and something as simple as eating a healthy, warm, home-cooked meal at a regular time can be a huge help.
The House works hard to create a special, safe, and comfortable environment for families of children needing hospital attention, at no cost to the families. Godfreys Law are proud to be able to help out such a worthy cause.
What was on the menu?
Our Godfreys Law team have done this before, and they know the process and the requirements. This time round we whipped up a crowd favourite, Nachos with all the fixings, followed by a peach and apple crumble with vanilla ice cream for dessert. After serving the House, our team sat down with the families to enjoy the kai, and can confirm first hand that it was all absolutely delicious.
Giving the gift of time
You too can give the invaluable gift of your time to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in other ways. To reserve a date to cook for the families at the Ronald McDonald house in Christchurch, head over to their website. Whilst your there, have a browse at what they’re up to and the other ways you can help.
Thank you again to the Christchurch Ronald McDonald House for having us – we’ll see you next time.
“There’s nothing more comforting than a home-cooked meal – but by cooking for the Family Dinner Programme, you have given so much more: the precious gift of time.”
